Solar panels with or without a battery

Many UK homeowners ask whether solar panels are enough on their own or whether battery storage is worth adding. The answer depends on how much electricity you use, when you use it and what you want from the system.

Solar-only systems

A solar-only system can reduce electricity imported from the grid during daylight hours. If you are often at home during the day, you may use more solar electricity directly. If you are out during the day, more of the electricity may be exported.

Solar with battery storage

A battery stores surplus daytime solar electricity so it can be used later, often in the evening when many homes use more power. This can reduce reliance on the grid and may make the system feel more resilient against future electricity price changes.

Unused energy and export tariffs

Any unused solar electricity may be exported and sold back to the grid through an export tariff such as the Smart Export Guarantee. Export rates and eligibility depend on the supplier, meter and tariff, so they should be checked before relying on them.

Why larger battery options are worth reviewing

For higher-usage homes, a larger battery may be worth comparing because there may be more daytime generation to store and more evening demand to cover. Bigger is not automatically better, but undersizing a battery can limit the benefit of the upgrade.

The balanced answer

Solar-only can be a simpler route. Solar plus battery storage is often the premium route to compare if your goal is stronger self-consumption, better grid independence and a more complete long-term setup.

Homeowner FAQs

Is a solar battery always worth it?

Not always. It depends on usage, system size, tariff, battery cost and how much solar electricity would otherwise be exported.

Can I add a battery later?

Often yes, but compatibility, wiring and inverter choice matter. Ask the installer whether the system is battery-ready.

Can I still sell electricity if I have a battery?

Potentially. Export arrangements depend on your tariff, supplier, meter and system setup.
